Parking meters in the Loop will rise to $6.50 an hour — a 13-percent jump from the current $5.75 rate. The rate drops to $3.25 per hour between 9 p.m. and 8 a.m. for all spots bounded by Wacker Drive to the west and north, Lake Michigan to the east and Congress Parkway to the south.
The 2013 increase means hourly parking in the Loop has jumped as much as 60 percent in most of Chicago’s metered spaces. Rates in the Loop rose nearly 53 percent since 2010 when an hour cost $4.25. Parking downtown in 2010 used to be $2.50 an hour and $1.25 an hour in Chicago’s neighborhoods.
On New Year’s Day, meters in the Loop area will begin charging $6.50 an hour — up from $5.75.
The rate change will make Chicago the city with the most expensive metered parking, according to a report from the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency.

The wild and exotic animals will be surrounded by plenty of good cheer as Brookfield Zoo celebrates the 30th anniversary of the popular Holiday Magic Lights Festival. I’ve been to this one a few times in the past, and it’s truly a visually gorgeous display. You’ll get to enjoy over 1 million lights, animated displays, a laser light show, the Holly Jolly Theater, which features performers and local choirs, and indoor exhibits like Great Bear Wilderness. The fest is open 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday and Sundays through December 18 and daily December 26-31, 2011. The regular parking and admission fees apply.

Ever since ZooLights first opened, this has been one of my favorite holiday activities in Chicago. One of the best parts for me is the 3D glasses they give you, which bring the colorful, bright lights and attractions to life right before your eyes. The spiced wine, ice carvings, carousel, and, of course, zoo animals and jolly ol’ Saint Nick all create an experience that is sure to fill you with the holiday spirit. ZooLights is open 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. weekends only through December 10, and nightly December 16-January 1, 2012. Admission is free, but there is a charge to park in the Lincoln Park Zoo’s lot.

I discovered the wonder of this fascinating and lovely display by accident one day many years ago as I was driving through the area. For about six blocks, you will see homes all decked out in their seasonal best with elaborate lights, giant Santas, a tree house decorated with Disney characters, and awesome Christmas trees and other fun, animated creations. The local Sauganash Park Community Association encourages this annual tradition by holding a Holiday Home Decorating Contest, which really gives us grateful spectators a memorable treat for the eyes.
