National Sloppy Joe Day is on March 18th. This day is an annual observance. Also, this hot sandwich is an American all time favorite. The origin of the Sloppy Joe is interesting. Circa 1930, Mayor Sweeney of Maplewood, NJ traveled to Havana, Cuba. There he met a bartender nicknamed Sloppy Joe. Sloppy Joe (the bartender) made the mayor a sandwich with coleslaw, ham, cow-tongue, swiss cheese, with lots of dressing and was served on thin rye bread.  Yes, it was messy or “sloppy”, but also delicious. The sandwich was a hit with the mayor! As a result, the mayor asked one of Town Hall Deli’s proprietors, Fred Heinz, to replicate it. Hence, Town Hall Deli of South Orange became The Birthplace of the Sloppy Joe!”

There are a few variations of the sandwich. You have the original Sloppy Joes, Super Sloppy Joes, and Gumbo Sloppy Joes. Whatever your preference may be, have a hot sandwich today and enjoy!
