Passion Pit is an American Indie Electronica band from Cambridge, Massachusetts. In the beginning, Passion Pit had only member, Michael Angelakos. Michael Angelakos started as a one-person project who was the singer and songwriter. It all began when he wanted to give his then-girlfriend a special gift for valentine’s day. He decided to produced an album showing his love for her. He named the album “Chunk of Change” . The album ended up in hands of many of his friends and acquaintances.
In the beginning, Michael wrote and performed all his material by himself using only a laptop. After his first show in Boston, a musician named Ian Hultquist approached him and showed interest in creating and making music. He wanted to collaborate with him. In 2007 Passion Pit was formed. The group consisted of: Micheal Angelakos, Ian Hultquist, Ayad Al Adhamy, Thom Plasse, and Adam Lavinsky. The band spent a significant amount of time trying to find a collaborative format that would work best for them. Eventually, Jeff Apruzzese and Nate Donmoyer replaced Thom Plasse and Adam Lavinsky. Xander Singh soon after replaced Ayad Al Adhamy in 2012.
The band opened for many famous artists, including Death Cab for Cutie. This led to labels showing interest. In 2008 the Frenchkiss label selected “Chunk of Change” for a re-release with two bonus tracks. The track “Sleepyhead,” gathered a lot of attention from many bloggers and fans of electronic indie pop. Columbia Records soon heard about the band. They also enjoyed what they heard and paired with Frenchkiss to release their first album, “Manners”. The album was released in spring of 2009. On May 7, 2012, “Gossamer”, their second album was released and “Take a Walk,” became the most successful single.
After the album’s release, Michael canceled the remaining dates of the tour and entered a facility to seek help for his bipolar disorder. Passion Pit continued their activities a few months later, starting with an appearance on Saturday Night Live. The next year they headlined the Coastline Festival in Florida and released the Constant Conversations EP. Xander Singh and Ian Hultquist quit the band in late 2014. In April 2015, Passion Pit released their latest record titled Kindred. On Saturday, July 8, 2017 Passion Pit will be performing at The Taste of Chicago in Grant Park.
