The Marine Corps is turning 243 years old on November 10, 2018. Celebrating it’s birthday is essential to these servicemen worldwide. On Nov. 1, 1921 Gen. John A. Lejeune issued Order No. 47, Series 1921. As a result, there’s a reading of a summary of the history, mission and traditions of the Corps. This applies to every command each subsequent year on Nov. 10. Thus, honoring the founding of the Marine Corps.
Some readings are met with silent observation. However, others are more ceremonial in reading. In 1952, the reading was formalized by Commandant Gen. Lemuel C. Shepherd Jr. Furthermore, approved in 1956, these details were listed in the Marine Corps Drill Manual. Lastly, he spearheaded the inclusion of a cake ceremony and other traditions still held every year at the Marine Corps Birthday Ball.
